My Life AZ: How I Found Happiness in Azerbaijan

Have you ever wondered what it's like to live in Azerbaijan? Do you know anything about this country and its culture? If not, you're missing out on a lot of amazing things. In this article, I will share with you my personal story of how I moved to Azerbaijan from the US and how it changed my life for the better. I will also give you some tips and insights on how to enjoy your stay in this beautiful land of fire.

Why I Decided to Move to Azerbaijan

I was born and raised in California, where I had a comfortable and successful life. I had a good job as a content writer, a nice apartment, a loving family and friends. But I always felt like something was missing. I wanted to explore the world and experience different cultures. I wanted to challenge myself and grow as a person.

So one day, I decided to quit my job and sell everything I owned. I bought a one-way ticket to Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan. Why Azerbaijan? Well, I had heard about this country from a friend who had visited it before. He told me that it was a hidden gem in the Caucasus region, with rich history, diverse landscapes, friendly people and delicious food. He also said that it was very affordable and safe for travelers.

I was intrigued by his description and decided to give it a try. I didn't know much about Azerbaijan before I arrived, but I was eager to learn more.

What I Discovered in Azerbaijan

As soon as I landed in Baku, I was amazed by the contrast between the modern skyscrapers and the ancient buildings. The city was vibrant and cosmopolitan, yet full of charm and character. I felt welcomed by the locals who greeted me with smiles and curiosity.

I spent the first few weeks exploring Baku and its surroundings. I visited the iconic Flame Towers, the Old City with its medieval walls and palaces, the Heydar Aliyev Center with its futuristic design, the Carpet Museum with its colorful exhibits, the Fountain Square with its lively atmosphere and many more attractions.

I also enjoyed trying different dishes from the Azerbaijani cuisine, such as dolma (stuffed grape leaves), plov (rice pilaf), qutab (flatbread with various fillings), kebab (grilled meat), baklava (sweet pastry) and sherbet (fruit drink). I loved how they used fresh ingredients and spices to create flavorful and satisfying meals.

How I Found Happiness in Azerbaijan

After exploring Baku for a while, I decided to venture out to other regions of Azerbaijan. I wanted to see more of the country's natural beauty and cultural diversity. I took buses, trains and taxis to different destinations, such as:

  • Ganja: The second-largest city in Azerbaijan, known for its historical monuments and green parks.

  • Sheki: A picturesque town in the mountains, famous for its silk production and palace complex.

  • Gabala: A popular resort area with ski slopes, cable cars and amusement parks.

  • Nakhchivan: An autonomous republic within Azerbaijan, with its own unique culture and traditions.

  • Lankaran: A coastal city in the south, with sandy beaches and thermal springs.

  • Nagorno-Karabakh: A disputed territory that is internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan but controlled by ethnic Armenians.

In each place I visited, I met new people who showed me kindness and hospitality. They invited me to their homes, shared their stories and taught me their customs. They also helped me with the language barrier, as I learned some basic words and phrases in Azerbaijani. I was impressed by their resilience and optimism, despite the challenges they faced.

I also discovered more about myself and what makes me happy. I realized that I didn't need a lot of material things to be content. I learned to appreciate the simple pleasures of life, such as a beautiful sunset, a warm cup of tea, a friendly conversation, a good book, a cozy bed. I also found joy in learning new things, exploring new places, meeting new people and making new memories.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Here are some common questions that people ask me about my life in Azerbaijan:

  • How did you find a job in Azerbaijan?

I work as a freelance content writer, so I can work from anywhere as long as I have a laptop and an internet connection. I use online platforms like Upwork and Fiverr to find clients and projects. I also write for some local publications and websites.

  • How do you deal with the visa and immigration issues?

Azerbaijan offers a 30-day e-visa for citizens of 95 countries, including the US. You can apply online and get it within three days. You can also extend your stay for another 60 days by applying at the State Migration Service. If you want to stay longer, you can apply for a temporary or permanent residence permit.

  • How do you cope with the cultural differences?

I try to be respectful and open-minded about the cultural differences. I learn as much as I can about the Azerbaijani culture, history, religion, language and etiquette. I also ask questions and listen to the locals when they explain something to me. I try to adapt to their way of life as much as possible, without losing my own identity.

  • How do you communicate with the locals?

The official language of Azerbaijan is Azerbaijani, which is a Turkic language similar to Turkish. Many people also speak Russian, which is widely used in education, business and media. Some people also speak English, especially the younger generation and those who work in tourism or hospitality. I use a combination of Azerbaijani, Russian and English to communicate with the locals. I also use gestures, body language and Google Translate when necessary.

  • What are some of the challenges or difficulties you face in Azerbaijan?
